PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Lendikinya, Tanzanzia
LOCATION
The project is centered around the small village Lendikinya approximately 12 km SW of Monduli, Tanzania.

HISTORY AND CULTURE
Tanzania was formed in 1964 through the union of two former states, Tanganyika and Zanzibar
Their language, Maa, includes idioms still spoken in Ethiopia and Sudan
Maasai society is organized based on Patriarchy
Women are divided into two groups: Ages 1-16 and 17-older
Most women are self-employed in the informal sector
They have the highest rate of child marriages, illiteracy, and poverty among women in the country

ECONOMY
Developing/emerging lower middle income economy
GDP per capita $1,050.68 (2018)
Heavily based on agriculture which accounts for 28.7% of the GDP and provides 85% of exports
Agricultural labor force: 50% of the employed population
The strong dependence on agriculture makes the economy highly vulnerable to weather shocks and fluctuating commodity prices
Lack of knowledge & infrastructure to develop agricultural technology means natural disasters can severely damage living standards, inflating unemployment, hunger, malnutrition rates, and mortality due to starvation
Economic aid: $490 million (2014)
